Breaking through the aesthetics of public art
Our paper will address the following research questions drawing on the practices of a selection of artists that we are currently working with
- Is value in art in the public sphere a single distinctive system that stands alongside other social/cultural/economic systems of value or is it an iteration of existing forms of cultural production such as social entrepreurialism?
- In what sense is value in relation to art a process of negotiating across difference? What are the implications for approaches to practice?
- Should one set of the criteria be priviledged over others e.g. public good over the aesthetic?
- Is art uniquely placed to frame social, cultural, aesthetic and ethical value systems?
