“Presentation of an on-going project: The Passion for the Real”. An interdisciplinary project about documentary elements in the arts.

Subject area and main focus: Documentary elements and new genres like soap operas and reality tv have taken place in our lives. This development has roots in history, psychology and society. The project has a starting point in four different forms of art, fine art, film, design and opera, and tries to articulate the interplay between them. The opera project will be in focus of the presentation where we try to explore and describe the possible context and aesthetics in relation between documentary elements and opera as art form. The modern opera works on at least three levels: reconstruction of a period, emotional appeal, and historical description. The project will discuss these levels in the context of our own time: the multifacetted problem of performing old operas. One issue is dealing with if opera can be used as soap opera documenting our own time, and another the meaning of musical and physical gestures. Certain focus will lie on the sharp border between historical facts and necessary improvisation.
