Looking for the content of music – Musical interpretation with the aim of performance.

Subject area and main focus: Musical analysis and interpretation with the emphasis on musical content and meaning.

I want to discuss the possibilities of interpretive analyses of musical works to increase the interpreter’s consciousness of musical signification and the potential of analysis to support his or her appropriation – in a Ricoeurian sense – of a musical work. Instead of trying to explain the content, the music itself opens to categories of interpretation which lead to the issues of meaning.

To these categories belong:

• process-related interpretation,
• emotional interpretation,
• character-related interpretation
• narrative interpretation.

The questions asked in the process are presumably crucial to an understanding of the content of a work.
